Drone roof inspection in Teignmouth

The Georgian and Regency terraces along Teignmouth's front were built right up against the promenade and the sea wall, with barely any depth of pavement in front and often a shared wall or a narrow passage behind. A scaffold tower needs working space on at least one side, and on a terrace built this tightly, front and back both, that space simply is not available without closing a stretch of the seafront path, which is its own conversation with the council before a single pole goes up.

Parking along the front is restricted for most of the year and worse in season, when the same streets a scaffold lorry would need are full of visitors' cars. None of that is a problem for a drone, which needs a short clear stretch of pavement to launch from and nothing more, well away from the building it is surveying.

Behind the front, the ground climbs quickly, and the Victorian villas built on that rising ground come with their own access difficulty, gardens on a slope, retaining walls, and driveways too narrow for a scaffold wagon to turn in. Seafront apartment conversions add a different problem again, several owners sharing one roof and one decision about access, which can turn a simple inspection into a long conversation before anyone has even looked at the roof itself.

Properties on the far side of the estuary, reached from the town only by the passenger ferry or by the road round via Shaldon bridge, add a further complication for anyone trying to get scaffold materials there quickly. A drone crossing the water is no different to flying over a garden, so a roof on the Shaldon side of the Teign gets exactly the same standard of inspection as one on the seafront itself.

A written report follows within 48 hours, prepared by Sam Hembury, whose construction background means the findings are read the way a builder would read them, not just described from a photograph. The operation is CAA registered, holding an Operator ID and Flyer ID, an A2 Certificate of Competency, and full Coverdrone insurance for commercial work, which matters flying close to a row of Georgian terraces on a busy seafront.
