Drone roof inspection in Sidmouth

The Esplanade's Regency and early Victorian townhouses are the reason Sidmouth looks the way it does, but that same ornate ironwork, rendered elevations and complex roof geometry that makes them special also makes them awkward to scaffold. Balconies, bay windows and decorative parapets get in the way of a standard tower, and ties fixed into old render can do more harm than the inspection was meant to prevent. Getting it wrong on a listed seafront terrace is not a small mistake.

A drone photographs the same facade and roofline from several angles without touching a single balcony rail or piece of ironwork. It can hold position off a bay window, move along a parapet gutter and check a lead lined valley from directly above, all without a scaffold designer having to work out how to build round a decorative feature that was never meant to take a fixing in the first place.

Sidmouth sits in a steep sided valley between Peak Hill and Salcombe Hill, both rising well over 150 metres, and a lot of the villas built up those valley sides are on plots that slope hard from the road. A scaffold base needs level ground, and on a Sidmouth hillside that often means terracing or extra staging just to get a tower stable before any roof work starts, adding real cost to what should be a straightforward check.

The drone is unaffected by any of that. It climbs from wherever the plot allows, a driveway, a lower terrace, even a neighbouring lane, and holds steady over the roof regardless of what the ground underneath is doing. For a villa roof with several changes of pitch as it steps up the hillside, a single flight sees all of it, where a ground based inspection would need scaffold moved and rebuilt at each level.

The valley funnels wind straight off the sea and up through the town, and that creates gusting, turbulent conditions around chimneys and ridges that make ladder work properly unpleasant, and on some days simply unsafe. A drone flight is planned around the conditions on the day, and if the wind is too strong to fly safely it is rescheduled rather than pushed through, which is not always an option for a person balanced on a ladder against a gutter.

Further up the valley at Sidford and Sidbury, some of the older properties are thatched, which rules out ladder or scaffold contact for the same reasons it does at Ottery St Mary, fire risk and damage to the thatch itself. Flying instead means the ridge, the chimney wrapping and the eaves can all be checked from a safe distance, with the CAA registered operation and A2 Certificate of Competency behind every flight regardless of how tight the valley gets.
