Drone roof inspection in Plymouth

Plymouth's streets climb hard between the waterfront and the high suburbs, and parking a scaffold lorry, let alone building a tower, is often the real obstacle here.

A city that was never built for a scaffold lorry

Plymouth is a working naval city built across a series of limestone ridges, so a street that looks level on a map can drop and climb sharply within a couple of hundred yards. In the surviving Victorian terraces around the Hoe, Stoke and Mutley, houses sit tight against the pavement with no driveway and often no space at the kerb either, which leaves a scaffold firm trying to find somewhere to put a lorry before the job has even started.

On streets that narrow, a scaffold tower usually needs a section of pavement or road closed off while it stands, which means a permit, a timetable, and disruption to residents and passing traffic for days at a time over what might be a single roof check. That is a lot of process and cost to accept before anyone has actually confirmed there is a problem worth fixing.

The waterfront developments at Royal William Yard and Millbay bring a different version of the same issue. These are managed sites with restricted vehicle access, service routes, and building rules that were never designed around scaffolders, so getting equipment and a crew onto site at all can take longer than the inspection itself. Higher up, in the exposed suburbs at Crownhill and Southway, steep plots and tight modern estates repeat the problem the terraces already have.

Flying over the access problem

None of that matters to an aircraft. A drone survey does not need a lorry parked on Mutley Plain, does not need a section of pavement closed on the Hoe, and does not need site clearance to work a service road at Royal William Yard. It launches from open ground nearby and gets in close to the roof from the air, which removes the whole access negotiation that a ground based inspection would have to go through first.

For flat roofed buildings especially, that view from directly overhead is one a ladder was never going to give at all.

Plymouth is exposed to south-westerly gales coming straight off the Sound, and the salt air reaches well inland, but in a dense city like this, reaching the roof safely to check it is usually the harder problem, whatever the weather ends up doing to it. A survey that needs no ground footprint at all is built for exactly that kind of site.
