Drone roof inspection in Bude

Bude's cliff-top villas and holiday lets sit on some of the most exposed ground in the county, where a scaffold tower can become a hazard, and that is the gap a drone survey fills.

Exposed ground, and a lot of it let out

Bude takes the weather straight off the Atlantic with nothing to break it, and that matters for access as much as it does for the roof itself. A scaffold tower on one of the cliff-top approaches, or on an exposed bungalow plot at Stratton or Flexbury, is itself a structure that has to withstand serious wind loading while it stands, which affects how it can be built, how long it takes, and whether it is even sensible to put one up in anything but a calm spell.

A large share of Bude's housing is holiday accommodation, from Victorian and Edwardian villas converted into lets to bungalows and chalets on the cliff-top approaches, and most of that stock runs on a tight turnaround between guests. Booking a scaffold job around that gap is awkward at the best of times, and a tower left standing on a cliff-top plot for the duration of a survey is not something most owners want sitting there while paying guests are due in the following week.

Parking near the beaches and the canal gets restricted through the season too, which is exactly when a lot of owners want a roof checked before or after the busy months, adding another layer of difficulty to getting a scaffold vehicle anywhere near the property at the time it is actually needed.

A survey that does not need to stand in the wind

A drone flight is over in a fraction of the time a scaffold job would take, which matters directly on a site where wind is a real constraint rather than a minor inconvenience. There is no tower left standing on a cliff-top plot between one guest and the next, and no structure exposed to Atlantic gusts for days while a job gets finished.

The Mavic 4 Pro's 100 megapixel Hasselblad camera and 6K video give a close, sharp look at ridge tiles and flashings on the exposed villa and bungalow roofs around the cliff-top approaches, precisely where gales regularly strip ridge tiles and lift shallow-pitch coverings. For flat felt roofs on the older bungalows and holiday units, the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced's thermal camera can also pick up where a covering has already let water in beneath the surface.

None of this depends on the season either. A flight can be booked around a change of guests far more easily than a scaffold job can, and there is no vehicle that needs to find parking near Summerleaze or Crooklets during the weeks the town is at its busiest.

The report, and what it costs

Sam Hembury flies the inspection and writes the report from a construction background, and it lands within 48 hours, in plain language rather than a template written for the aircraft rather than the roof. The price is fixed and agreed before the flight, whatever time of year the booking falls in.

The operation is CAA registered with Operator ID and Flyer ID, holds an A2 Certificate of Competency, and carries full Coverdrone insurance for commercial work. On exposed cliff-top ground where a scaffold tower is itself a wind risk, and where the turnaround between paying guests rarely leaves room for one anyway, that is what flying actually solves.

Behind the survey

What Bude clients are actually buying

Nothing put up against the house

No scaffold tower, no ladder against the gutter, no base plate on the drive. The aircraft holds a standoff distance from the building for the whole inspection.

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency, which is what allows the closer operation near buildings and streets that makes this work in a terrace or a town centre.

100 megapixel camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video. The resolution is what lets the aircraft stay at a safe distance and still return detail close to what a person standing on the roof would see.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. Certificates go to managing agents, block committees and insurers as a matter of course, without anyone having to chase for them.
